On May 14, 2018, the westbound lanes of the Wando River Bridge closed after crews conducting a routine inspection found a broken cable that functioned as one of the bridge’s primary supports. The usual westbound traffic on I-526 was diverted to the Ravenel Bridge as well as Clements Ferry Road as the South Carolina Department of Transportation planned repairs. To ease the added congestion placed on those alternate routes, the SCDOT decided to reverse traffic in one of the eastbound lanes to resume two-way traffic flow. This meant they needed to build crossover lanes to take westbound drivers to and from the eastbound side of the Wando Bridge. Because of Banks Construction Company’s reliability, flexibility, and vast resources, the SCDOT turned to us to help.
Banks Construction immediately mobilized traffic control, survey, grading, and paving crews and all their accompanying equipment to get the job done safely, quickly and efficiently. By Sunday, May 20, the crossover lanes were completed and turned back over to the SCDOT. These lanes allowed residents and employees that rely on the Wando Bridge to return to a somewhat normal daily commute until the bridge was re-opened on June 2nd. We are honored that the SCDOT called on us and grateful for the opportunity to help our community.
Our employees share our dedication to reliability and innovation and demonstrate the talent and drive to get the job done right and on time.
