Dirty Jobs, Banks style!

To an outsider, there is nothing pretty about an asphalt plant.  There are tall silos that hold asphalt mix.  There are piles of dirt and rock.  There are conveyor belts, heavy equipment, and a lot of moving parts.

To us insiders, the plant is a well-oiled machine, the guts of our company, and the birthplace of the Greater Charleston area roadway system.

Friday, January 25, 2019, some of our non-plant personnel took a tour to see how the plant works.  Many of us (even though we are rock stars in our own right) went from outsiders to insiders.  We learned more than we could have imagined by taking a short walk outside of our normal workspace and immersed ourselves in a different world.

We stopped first at our Quality Assurance/Quality Control Lab.  We learned a bit about the different asphalt mixes and saw firsthand what a state-of-the-art lab looks like.  We then followed the lifecycle of the plant from start to finish.  We learned about the different kinds of aggregate, more about recycled asphalt, and how material goes from piles on the ground to a finished product.  We peeked inside the manufacturing side of a business we are all proud to represent.

Personally, we got to know the guys that do this day in and day out a bit better.  We listened and tried to absorb the knowledge that flows effortlessly out of them.  Our greatest assets are our people, and to bring together cross-functional teams and have them learn from one another makes for an awesome day!

Special thanks to our Asphalt Division for organizing and hosting a great plant tour.  Check out our photo gallery to see more!
